I look at my other half Brian's page and see all his wonderful hobbies, and I
wonder: what are my hobbies? I racked my brain. The fact is that I really don't
have any. I don't cook. (unless you count grilled cheese sandwiches). I'm not
musical. I don't collect anything (except clutter). But I do see to a lot of films.
Philadelphia has a wonderful resource in the Ritz Theatre chain in which you can
see anything from Hollywood blockbusters to more obscure independent and foreign
films. I go there a lot. This is a list of the films I have seen in the past few
of years. Most were seen in the theater but some were also seen on
DVD or on cable. Of course the list would be a lot longer if I included older
movies I see again and again (I love old movies!), but I restricted this
list to films that are relatively new or at least new to me. Some
were wonderful and some stunk like raw sewage. I intend to greatly expand this
(as the free time presents itself). It has been a real challenge putting
this together, although I remember every movie pretty vividly, I have no sense
of chronology; I had to do a lot of research with such resources as the
Internet Movie Data Base, and ticket stubs I forgot to throw away! At some
point I will create a ratings system. This will be difficult because I
frequently enjoy movies that from all quantifiable measurements are awful-but I
thoroughly enjoyed them nonetheless...

These are movies I tend to watch a lot. Some are really wonderful films, others are like "comfort food" for the mind. Films that give a lot of joy. I have many of them on VHS tape of DVD, and they are frequently on the one of the players. I just started this list, so it's far from complete. These are the films that first come to mind, and yes, they seem to be rather heavy in camp value. Some like it Hot is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. Priscilla also has a lot of campy drag in it but that's really about all that these two movies have in common. You could also include just about every science fiction movie I have ever seen, since they seem to have a great deal of rerun power. I have tried to include only the best and most intelligent, which makes for a much shorter list! For instance, Contact is a wonderfully intelligent film. Based on a novel by astronomer Carl Sagan, it's based more on reality then any SciFi film I have ever seen and yet it's a wonderful drama as well. I think the only thing all these movies have in common is they are populated with very believable and very flawed characters. They have wonderfully written scripts, good directors and great actors. I continue to update this list as films pop into my head. |
